Snow Mold

As the snow begins to melt, you may notice patches of Snow Mold in your lawn. There are two common varieties of Snow Mold in Utah; Pink Snow Mold and Grey Snow Mold. Both are caused by pathogens which affect cool season grasses in Utah. In most cases, regular mowing all the way into dormancy at a height of 2.5″ in the fall will help reduce the likelihood of Snow Mold, as will raking up leaves and other plant materials.

In most cases Snow Mold doesn’t require any type of preventive or curative fungicide treatment, except on golf courses, or other high maintenance turf. Both pathogens require cooler temps to be active. Raking affected areas will improve airflow and expose the pathogens to warmer daytime air and sunlight, and will speed up recovery.
